It was a relief to Amy that Robert didn’t appear to be in the slightest bit cross with her.

She sat up in bed and held her arms out to him. He ran to her, and Amy enveloped him in an embrace, tears forming in her eyes.

‘My boy.’

‘I’m sorry, Mama.’

‘It’s all right, darling,’ she said, kissing the top of his head.

He regarded her with his dark eyes. ‘Father said you were poisoned with arsenic.’

‘I was, but once again, Magda saved me.’

‘It was nothing to do with me, I swear. I would never do anything to hurt you.’

‘I’m well aware of that but – and I really need you to listen to me without getting angry – we think your accomplice did it. Your father dismissed all the male servants, but we have to be sure the person who poisoned me is really gone. What if they try it again or hurt one of the children?’

‘It was Douglas,’ he said quickly.

‘Thank you,’ she replied, able to breathe easier now she knew the person responsible was gone. ‘Why did you refuse to tell us before? Remember what I said – nothing will stop me loving you.’

‘Henry said he wanted to take this further but you stopped him. Thank you,’ he said, hanging his head.

‘This must stop. Now. I pray that it does with Douglas’s departure.’

‘It will, Mama, I promise.’

‘Good. How was it at your uncle’s?’

His first instinct was to tell her how Knapp had hit him and imprisoned him, but she looked so unwell and unhappy, all thanks to him. Like Jane, his mother could still make him feel genuine emotion. ‘It was fine, despite all the Bible reading.’

‘Never mind, you’re home now. Call your father for me, will you?’

She challenged him with a look at her use of the term father, but he just smiled and nodded, although he was disappointed. He’d wanted it to be just the two of them, but he also wanted to get back in her good books. ‘Certainly, Mother.’

Rather than fetch Henry himself, Robert rang the bell, which was answered by Evelyn, whose eyes lit up to see him.

‘Fetch my father, will you, Mrs Grier?’ he said in his best authoritative voice.

‘Yes, sir,’ she replied, surreptitiously reaching out to touch his hand, but he slammed the door shut in her face before she could make contact.
